A reference guide for safe & Successful Spirit Communication
With the veil so thin and Samhain (pronounced sah-wen) just around the corner, I wanted to offer my tips and information for anyone interested in or getting started in connecting with ghosts, spirits, and other entities.
First, don’t forget your personal Energy Basics
As with any ritual work, we always want to start AND finish with our energetic basics:
Grounding is the act of bringing your full attention, awareness, and experience Earth-side. When you are one with this physical existence. Grounding prevents us from escaping and bypassing ourselves and others. It is the critical anchor in our connection to Spirit. We chose this life for a reason: we are meant to be present for it.
Energetic cleansing is something you'll learn to do so often, you'll wonder how you went so long without doing it before. We are constantly absorbing others' energy, just like we pick up germs wherever we go. So what do we do? We wash our hands. Same goes for our energy field. We practice good spiritual hygiene.
It's easy to pick up energy, but we can also take steps to protect ourselves and prevent energetic overstimulation, harmful effects of the Evil Eye, and maintain strong spiritual boundaries. There are loads of ways to amplify protection, but envisioning a strong orb around you will always do the trick too.
If grounding is the anchor, connecting is the wind in the sails. Our connection to Spirit moves also connects us to our purpose and why we do what we do in life. Connecting is everything from meditation, prayer, ritual work, divination, etc. We will continuously work on various ways to connect throughout the program.
Remember: Ground → Cleanse → Protect → Connect
I also think understanding the layout or map of the energetic fields is extremely beneficial in this kind of work as well. Check out the previous episode on That Witch Podcast, as well as the visual diagram on my blog.
Don’t make it scary (unless that’s your thing)
It’s really not necessary to wait until the dead of night, light a bunch of candles, and sit in the dark silence to reach the dead. It’s nothing but a perpetuated Hollywood myth that the environment has to look like a scene out of a horror film in order to reach ghosts (when the truth is movie makers are just trying to portray the ghosts in their stories as creepy and scary themselves).
So create the setting that feels best for you and the energy of the spirits you’re trying to connect with instead! It can be brightly lit with soft music and incense in the background. And it certainly can be in the basement in the middle of the night–just do what gets YOU in a state of confidence and power.
It’s the user, not the tool
Whether it’s a tarot deck, a pendulum, a Ouija board, a bag of runes, a scrying mirror, or a gazing crystal, etc. tools are tools; it is the way in which a person handles the tool and for what purposes that affect the ending results.
Don’t get caught up in the hype of myths and rumors, most of these stories are rooted in totally negligent behavior and ignorance of energetic basics. Divination and spirit communication tools like tarot decks and Ouija boards are used every single day around the world by spiritual practitioners and witches and even regular ol’ muggles and nothing evil springs from the experience.
→ You know your shit, you know you’re in total autonomy of your entire being on every level, and you’re in control of your conversations with spirits. You got this.
Let go of your expectations
Signs and messages are rarely what we think they are going to be, and I actually find that by “thinking” about it at all beforehand tends to block us off from what is really being communicated to us. You will have a much more successful and profound experience if you enter into it with an open mind and a grounded heart–a state of being that I recommend entering into any kind of spiritual work with.
Prepare your intentions and your questions ahead of time, and then allow the experience to unfold and take place naturally. I recommend keeping a notepad or something to document any audible or visual messages and answers received.
An expectation looks like...
thinking a visual message from a spirit must be something that takes place in the physical energy realm and everyone in the room can see it and confirm it happened.
A realistic sign can actually look like...
a vision or image that comes to one or more persons mind’s eye; subtle noises or whispers that one or more people can hear (usually in their head); A feeling, vibe, or emotion that comes over one or more people in the room. Don’t judge the signs, simply make note of them to process later on, over time.
You’re in the driver’s seat
Metaphysical work like spirit communication should not be practiced from a place of deep fear and insecurity. We all experience this frame of mind throughout our life, and that’s totally okay! But that’s not the best state of mind for magick, divination, and spirit channeling. The energy we tend to invoke during this state is also of deep fear and insecurity, so it’s best to just wait until we’re feeling more secure and trusting of our own power.
If you are ever presently engaged in ritual, spirit, or magickal work that starts to feel wrong or off in any way, trust your gut! Thank the present energy for its purpose, say goodbye, and close your circle or ceremony or ritual. Ground, cleanse, and protect yourself, the area, and the tools you were working with. Then I recommend focusing on grounding for the remainder of your day afterward. Reach out and talk with trusted friends and members of the spiritual community about your experience if you would benefit from some emotional support and validation afterwards as well.
That’s it. No special spell or tool or person to break a hex or exorcize a demon from your body. Simply your own belief and knowledge that you are the captain of your own ship. You say what goes when it comes to your physical and energetic bodies. If you feel something attached to you, do a simple but profound ritual that cleanses your energy and helps you step into your power. That’s really all it takes. YOU are the creator of your reality, always, period.
